How Long Does a Camshaft Position Sensor Last?

2018/05/25

Camshaft position sensor is a sensor that gathers information about the car’s camshaft speed and sends it to the car’s engine control module. The engine control module uses those data to determine the timing of the ignition and the timing of the fuel injection the engine requires. The engine will not be able to function properly without this information.

Since the sensor sends data to the engine computer to tell when to fire and when more fuel is needed, when the car is started, the camshaft position sensor plays a vital role.

Actually the sensor is built to last as long as the car does, but in most cases it has to be replaced well before that. The sensor’s service period can be influenced by the heat that the engine produces, and if the sensor is in need of repair, it is very noticeable:

  • car struggles to start
  • car won’t accelerate like it is supposed to
  • Check Engine Light on
  • cylinders of the engine are misfiring
  • car does not idle properly
